I was re-reading John Steinbeck’s excellent novel "Of Mice and Men," recently. It is a sad book about the harshness of the world and how illusions and dreams have no real place in the life of the common man. When I got to the end of the book, there is a scene where George has found Lennie after he has had panicked and killed Curley's wife. He tells, Lennie to turn away and after describing their dream life he asks him to look at the rabbits and then puts the luger to the bottom of his skull and kills him.
This sad scene made me think about the difference in how middle aged women break up with their men as compared to younger women. Younger women will weep and yell and want you to participate in the last fight of the relationship while older women will just tell you to look at the rabbits and leave quietly as you gaze out the window.

Oh my gosh, this is fabulous. And so true.
From a child to 40's I left without explaining why. Finally, last time (we had been dating 2 months) I sat the guy down & explained..He refused to acknowledge it...
either way is painful-
With age comes wisdom ..
or ... the whatever attitude ..
chrissy, I think it is mostly true.
jade, these are often excruciatingly painful moments.
jc, I think perspective.
I had not thought of that until I read your blog. It's true. Me, I just turn and leave with no words.
