The Real Conversation

So I am having Thai food in a remarkably undistinguished eatery near my house. In the booth behind me there is a middle aged women who seemed to be visiting her Loyola student daughter. Because they were talking loudly I could not ignore their incipient conversation which followed what I consider to be a classic form.

Mom: So are you studying hard? ( i.e.: please God be studying some and not wasting the astounding amount of money we are paying for your tuition)

Daughter: I am working incredibly hard, mom. I am studying five hours a night. (Ok, I do look at the books a little the night before my test, but there is partying to do!)

Mom: What are you doing for fun? (Please God, do not get pregnant from that dope dealing loser you brought home for Thanksgiving.)

Daughter: I take long walks in the evenings and mostly just go to the library. (I am ripping it up every night, using my fake ID to get into clubs all over Wrigleyville.)

Mom: Have you thought more about taking that LSAT course we talked about? (She is never going to get a job after graduation)

Daughter: I am looking into it, mom. I talked to a guy who is in law school last weekend and he gave me some tips. (Shit, mom, I don’t want to go to law school. I am going to have a singing career! And I did talk a little about law school with that guy as he was taking my clothes off.)

Mom: I am glad I came down to visit you. (It really is hopeless.)

Daughter: Thanks mom, I love seeing you too. (Why won’t she leave already. For God’s Sake!)
