Following a bizarre weather spell where the temperatures were in the 50s (f), we are about to have our first major snow storm of the season in Chicago today. As my father used to say, “there is no possible excuse for not going to work. Work is sacred,” so I am venturing out nonetheless. As such, I present you a useful word to cover such a calamity:
graupel, noun – snow pellets or soft hail.

I am looking forward to a bit of snow today...let's see if the prediction is correct for the amounts they say will fall...
caroline, looking at the radar I fear we will get 6 to 8 inches of snow.
Look on the bright side, if you get snowed in, you won't be able to go to work.
No? Yes?
Come on, it's a valid excuse. Employers shouldn’t make their employees come into work if conditions are treacherous ;)
Off to grapple with graupel?
Graupel. Sounds vaguely French. Or is it one of those many words reputedly used by the Inuit to describe the various forms of snow?
I hope you don't have to abandon your bus on Lake Shore Drive this evening.
I shall try to fit that word in somewhere today..
We didn't get much snow, but the ice under the snow was traffic stopping.
